    Been a while

    2011 - 05.29

Wow, the rudimentary mistake of the blogger – letting real life stuff prevent me from blogging, ah dang it!

I’ve mostly been working on Project: Cards recently – it’s on ModDB now and coming together you can check out the site here : Project: Cards.  Also, I’ve just moved from the god awful servage.net hosting to godaddy – who already seem a helluva lot better than servage.net ever was.  I’ll post about my woes with them later.

As the site is in transition and I’m moving things around – some stuff may be broken.  If it is feel free to let me know 🙂

    Eeeeep, bugs ahoy!

    2011 - 01.18

Though I am not blogging much during this period, I’m checking my email daily, along with the game stats, and removing vasts amount of spam that come in each day.  Keeping all the updates updated, and so forth.

Utter horror filled me when I attempted to log in today.  Instead of my normal wordpress login screen, I was greeted with a rather scary looking set of error messages :

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at

Terror filled my heart – had my blog been hacked?  Had I started blogging about how certain pills had increased the size of  my manhood by many inches, along with giving me a six pack and made me able to automatically date every girl on facebook?

I checked the front page of the site, and thankfully, I saw no posts like that.  Unable to log in, I went to the next best thing – I loaded up my FTP client and opened the offending file ( services.php ).  To my great relief, I saw the problem.  For some strange reson, upgrading the addtoany plugin to version .9.9.7.3 caused a tab followed by a \n to appear on line one of this file.  PHP sent this tab and newline to the browser, which meant it couldn’t send cookie info first.  Which caused everything to fall on it’s head.

Quickly deleting this, and making sure that <? appeared on the first line solved the problem, and I could log in post.  Let this be a lesson to everyone who uses the automatic update features of wordpress – make sure you check everything works properly before signing off for the night.  The login screen being down isn’t the world’s biggest problem.  But what if it had been something the prevented my front page from being accessed?

UPDATE : After a quick google, I found the problem was resolved very quickly by the addtoany team.  LINK

    The Galactic News Network

    2010 - 12.19

I’ve almost got a very cool new feature to put live – the Galactic News Network – or GNN for short ( name change very possible ).  Part of the future core features is to have a real economy.  I.e.  silver is needed a lot, therefore the price of silver ore goes up,  lots of new people join the game, the amount of copper mined shoots up, therefore the price is reduced.

Now the GNN is a way of introducing events into this system.  Maybe someone comes back from a mining mission with nothing but a million tonnes of silver.  Maybe someone has some really bad luck and loses a  lot of moles on a mission.  Maybe a war breaks out.  All of these can be part of of a GNN news packet.  As these events happen, they will be record on the GNN website – and even cooler – a realtime alert will be sent to all logged in players.  To start with, all missions on conclusions will send a message to GNN, informing them of the result of the mission – and GNN will broadcast them all 🙂  Once I have a larger and more regular player base, only certain ones will be broadcast – noticeable events, great hauls, first mining missions for new players.  These events will be linked to player profiles as well.  Should be pretty sweet 🙂

No releases for so long :(

    2010 - 12.15

Yup, I feel bad about it.  Alas a cold mixed with rl work end of year madness has resulted in a sudden decline in productivity on the game.  The good news is now I am on holiday till next year.   Which means a lot more coming soon 🙂  I’m thinking of actually doing another time based challenge to get the new parts of the game in place.  My internal wiki of development ideas and lore for the game has been growing steadily.  Once I *do* finally pick a name, I’ll make sure I can get it uploaded as to give more of a view of the game.  It’s pretty bleak 🙂

Strangely, the blog has seen quite a large jump in traffic today, I can’t quite seem to work out why, nothing to major.  Will have to check the logs and see if I can find a reason.  This really is quite a pointless post.  But hell, it is my blog 🙂
